Specialized Care for Eating Disorders
Dr. Shampaine provides compassionate and tailored care to help children, adolescents, and adults with eating disorders regain a healthy relationship with food and their bodies and emotions. Her treatment approach considers the profound effects of eating disorders on the brain and body and the underlying psychiatric conditions that often coexist, such as mood and anxiety disorders.
Thorough Psychiatric Evaluation
To develop a safe and effective treatment plan, Dr. Shampaine first conducts a thorough psychiatric evaluation that clarifies the specific eating disorder and situates it within the context of an individual’s overall emotional functioning. Eating disorders can have severe medical consequences, and she may recommend a medical assessment to determine the level of medical monitoring needed to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes.
Coordinated, Evidence-Based, and Developmentally-Appropriate Interventions
Dr. Shampaine utilizes only empirically-supported and developmentally-appropriate approaches to treatment, such as Family-based therapy (FBT) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-E). When necessary, she may also recommend psychiatric medication. She works closely with outpatient teams, including dieticians, therapists, and primary care doctors, to provide a coordinated and informed treatment strategy.
Emotion-Focused Family Therapy
Caregivers play an important role in supporting their loved ones during treatment and recovery. That is why Dr. Shampaine also uses Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, which provides caregivers with additional tools as they guide their child through the healing process.
